The coolant in the Ford F-350 5.8 liter engine circulates with the assistance of the water pump. When the bearing goes bad in the water pump, you will begin to hear a high-pitched squealing sound coming from the engine compartment. When the bearing is bad, the impeller will not spin properly to circulate the coolant. Fluid may also begin leaking from the pump. Another possible problem that may come up with the water is the impeller will break. It does not take very long to change the water pump. About an hour and a half is all it will take to complete the project.

Instructions

    1

Make sure the engine is completely cool before you begin the project. Place the drain pan under the radiator and open the valve with a wrench to drain the engine coolant to the pan. Disconnect the lower radiator hose using the screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp.

    2

Remove the tension from the serpentine belt using a wrench to turn the belt tensioner clockwise. Lift the belt from the engine and gently ease the tensioner back into place. Remove the fan, the fan spacer and the shroud using a wrench. Remove the alternator pivot arm from the water pump using the ratchet and socket.

    3

Remove the heater hose from the water pump using the screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp. Remove the water pump retaining bolts with a socket and ratchet. Pull the pump away from the engine block along with the old gasket. Scrape any remaining gasket material away from the engine block with the scraper.

    4

Place a new gasket and water pump on the engine block. Install the water pump mounting bolts and tighten them with a socket and ratchet. Connect the heater hose to the water pump and tighten the hose clamp with the screwdriver. Install the alternator pivot arm to the pump using a socket and ratchet to tighten the bolts.

    5

Properly route the serpentine belt according to the diagram on the underside of the hood. Add tension to the belt by turning the belt tensioner with a wrench. Install the lower radiator hose and tighten the hose clamp with the screwdriver. Make sure the valve on the bottom of the radiator is closed. Refill the radiator and reservoir with engine coolant.
