The brakes of a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado should be inspected every 7,500 miles or whenever damage is suspected. Replacing the pads will only take about 15 minutes and requires no special tools. New pads can be purchased or ordered at most auto-parts shops.
Instructions
- 1
Loosen the lug nuts and raise the front wheel with a jack. Use jack stands for additional support. Remove the wheels.
2Unscrew the four bolts on the back side of the caliper and slide it off of the disc. Suspend the caliper with a length of wire. Do not let it hang from the brake line.
3Remove the brake pads. They are held in place by the clips on the inside of the caliper bracket. Discard the clips--the replacement pads should come with new clips.
4Install the new pads. The inner pad has one wear indicator, and the outer has two. Install the caliper. Apply red Loctite 272 or an equivalent threadlocker to the bolts and tighten to 129 ft-lbs. on the 15 series or 221 ft-lbs. on the 25 series. Repeat on the opposite side.
5Attach the wheels and lower the truck. Tighten the lug nuts.
