The 1998 Toyota Sienna has two air filter elements --- one for the engine and one for the air conditioning system cabin air. The engine air filter should be checked every time the oil is changed. When it gets severely dirty it impairs the air flow and results in less available horsepower and decreased fuel economy. The cabin air filter is a fine micro-filter that eliminates very small particles and pollen from the air.
Instructions

Open the hood and remove the two 10 mm bolts in the top of the air cleaner. The first one is in front and the other in the rear. The rear bolt does not have a lot of clearance so use a short 10 mm socket.
2Pull the filter housing on the driver's side just enough to pull the filter housing tabs out of the rubber bushings. The top of the housing will tip up enough to change the air filter. Install the new air filter. Push the housing back into the rubber bushings and install both 10 mm bolts.
3Open the glove compartment. Remove the screw in the lid support rod on the right side using a Phillips screwdriver. Squeeze both sides of the inner glove box and pull it out.
4Look straight in through the glove box hole and you will see a rectangular plastic door. Pinch the tabs on both sides and pull out the air cleaner. Install a new cabin air cleaner and push it in until the tabs click in place.
5Install the inner glove box by simply pushing it in. Lift the glove box lid and align the support bracket hole and install the screw.
