How to Replace a Broken Wheel Stud on a '98 Honda Accord

The wheel studs on a 1998 Honda Accord are pressed into the wheel hub. The wheel studs go through the mounting holes on the wheel and have lug nuts threaded onto them to secure the wheel to the vehicle. A broken wheel stud must be replaced or the wheel could fall off the vehicle during operation.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel with the lug wrench. Lift the corner of the 1998 Accord into the air, using the floor jack. Place the jack stand under the corresponding frame rail. Slowly lower the vehicle until it rests securely on the jack stand.

    2

Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench and set them aside. Pull the wheel and tire away from the vehicle.

    3

Thread a lug nut onto the broken wheel stud three full revolutions. Push the wheel stud out of the wheel hub by hitting the lug nut with the hammer until it breaks loose from the wheel hub. Unscrew the lug nut from the broken wheel stud by hand and pull the wheel stud from the back of the wheel hub.

    4

Place the new wheel stud into the wheel stud hole and hold it in place with one hand. Thread a lug nut onto the new wheel stud until the lug nut sits flush with the wheel hub. Slowly tighten the lug nut with the lug wrench, one-half turn at a time. Watch behind the hub and continue turning one-half turn at a time until the new wheel stud sits flush with the back of the wheel hub. Remove the lug nut with the lug wrench.

    5

Place the wheel and tire back onto the vehicle. Place all the lug nuts onto the wheel studs and tighten them by hand.

    6

Raise the corner of the vehicle off the jack stand with the floor jack. Remove the jack stand from under the vehicle and slowly slower the corner of the vehicle to the ground. Torque the lug nuts to the Honda according to the manufacturer's recommended torque, using the torque wrench.
