How to Install Rotors on a Dodge Ram 2500

The Dodge Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup truck is designed with a disk braking system. Some older models have a rear drum brake system. The rotor can become warped or worn from debris and mechanical problems, and require replacement. The average backyard mechanic can install a new rotor in about 30 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Jack the truck up and place it on the jack stands.

    2

Remove the wheel for the rotor to be replaced by turning the lug nuts in a counterclockwise direction. Set the wheel aside.

    3

Remove the caliper by turning its two rear bolts in a counterclockwise direction. The caliper will slide off of the rotor, and should be clamped with the C-clamp to prevent it from expanding. It can be set onto the suspension's control arms, but should not be hung from the brake lines as this could cause damage.

    4

Pull the rotor off of the hub. Without the caliper to hold it in place, it will slide freely off of the hub and axle. On some models, there may be a small nut securing it on the hub edge which can be turned counterclockwise and removed. Some rotors may be rusted in place or too firmly mounted to come off freely. In this case, using a board or crowbar to get it off with leverage may be necessary. Inspect the rotor for damage, and set it aside.

    5

Press a new rotor onto the hub and secure the hub nut, if applicable.

    6

Replace the caliper by sliding it onto the rotor quickly after releasing it from the C-clamp. It must be positioned quickly so it will not expand and require extreme force to press back in. Secure the caliper's rear bolts tightly by turning them in a clockwise direction.

    7

Replace the wheel, tighten the lug nuts and let the truck down from the jack stands.

    8

Repeat the steps for the remaining rotors.
