The transmission is one of the most important components of your Chevy S10 four-wheel-drive (4x4) truck, as it allows you to switch between the various gears of the vehicle. Rebuilding the transmission is an exceedingly difficult task and can take several hours. If you are an inexperienced mechanic, do not attempt to rebuild your transmission; instead, take your vehicle to a mechanic if you are experiencing problems with your transmission.

Instructions

    1

Place the vehicle's transmission into either third or fourth gear.

    2

Lift the vehicle using a jack. Place jack stands at the front of the S-10 to support it.

    3

Drain the transmission by loosening the drain plug with a socket wrench. Place a pan underneath the transmission to catch the transmission fluid.

    4

Remove the gearshift lever by removing its two bolts with a socket wrench. Plug the opening with a towel to prevent any dirt from entering.

    5

Remove the bolts from the driveshaft with a socket wrench. Pull off the driveshaft.

    6

Remove the exhaust pipes. Disconnect the hydraulic lines from the slave cylinder with a socket wrench. Remove the slave cylinder's bolts, then remove the slave cylinder.

    7

Place a floor jack underneath the transmission to support it. Remove the bolts from the crossbar, and remove the bar. Remove the flywheel underpan by using a socket wrench to unscrew its bolts.

    8

Remove the six transmission-to-housing bolts. Pull the transmission from underneath your vehicle.

    9

Reattach the transmission to the underside of your vehicle. Do not attach the bolts yet. Place it into third or fourth gear, and coat the shaft splines with high-temperature grease. Install the guide pins at the top two bolt holes to help you reattach the transmission.

    10

Attach the bolts to secure the transmission to the vehicle. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 35 foot-lbs.

    11

Reattach the flywheel underpan and crossbar. Reassemble the slave cylinder, and reattach the exhaust pipes.

    12

Reinstall the driveshaft and gearshift lever. Remove the jack stands, and lower the S-10. Add transmission fluid to the transmission. For the exact type of transmission, consult your S-10's owner's manual.
