Jeep introduced the Cherokee in 1974 as a less expensive alternative to the Wagoneer which was introduced in 1962. Jeep downsized the Cherokee for 1984. The 1984 Cherokee is powered by either a 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder with one-barrel carburetor or a General Motors sourced 2.8-liter V-6 engine with a two-barrel carburetor. The engines have fuel filters located in different places but are readily replaced.
Instructions

Park the Cherokee on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake. Locate the fuel filter attached to the driver side frame rail, near the gas tank.
2Place a drain pan under the filter. Loosen the hose clamps at each end of the filter with a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the hoses from the ends of the filter. Catch any fuel that leaks from the hoses in the drain pan. Have shop rags on hand to wipe up any spills. The amount of fuel spilt will be small.
3Loosen the bracket bolt that holds the filter to the frame rail with a ratchet and socket. Slide the filter out of the bracket.
4Slide a new filter into the bracket. Make sure the arrow on the filter is pointing towards the engine. Tighten the bracket bolt. Push the fuel lines onto the ends of the filter and tighten the hose clamps.

Remove the wing nut that holds on the top of the air cleaner. Remove the top. Remove the two vacuum lines from the air cleaner intake. Wrap a piece of masking tape around them and label with a marker for proper installation. Remove the air filter and cleaner housing.
6Locate where the fuel line enters the carburetor. Place a shop rag under the fuel line. Spray the area with carburetor cleaner to remove any dirt. The fuel line threads into a fitting with a hex-head. Hold the fitting with an open-end wrench. Use a line-wrench to loosen the fuel line. Unscrew the fuel line. Pull the fuel line back just far enough to disengage the flared end of the line from the fitting. Move the line to the side.
7Loosen the fitting with the wrench. Unscrew the fitting to reveal the fuel filter. Remove the filter. Note that there is a spring behind the filter.
8Install the spring and a new filter. There are two types of filter a paper unit and a porous brass unit make sure you have the right one. Thread on the fitting by hand and tighten with the wrench. Install and hand thread the fuel line. Be careful not to cross-thread the fuel line. Tighten the fuel line with the line-wrench.
9Mount the air cleaner housing and filter. Attach the vacuum lines. Mount the air cleaner top and thread on the wing nut.
