Unlike previous GM vehicles that use an ignition switch mounted low on the steering column, the 1996 Cavalier Z24 uses an ignition switch mounted to the left side of the steering column bearing retainer housing. The key lock cylinder in this design actuates the ignition switch directly instead of using the theft prone linkage and pushrod design that earlier GM cars and light trucks used. Pay special attention to the air bag system used in this car, when replacing an ignition lock cylinder, to prevent damage to the vehicle and serious personal injury.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable using an 8 mm wrench. Wait ten minutes for the residual charge in the air bag system to discharge. Remove the lower trim panel from below the steering column using a T20 Torx driver or 7 mm socket and ratchet. Unplug the two yellow air bag connectors located behind the trim panel on the instrument panel brace.

    2

Lower the tilting steering wheel completely. Remove the tilt lever by twisting it counterclockwise to unscrew it from the tilt mechanism. Remove the three T15 Torx screws that attach the two halves of the steering column trim to each other and the steering column. Unsnap the two trim pieces from each other and lay them aside.

    3

Turn the ignition switch to the "Run" position. Reach behind the lock cylinder housing with your finger and push the release button. Pull the lock cylinder out of the column while holding the release button.

    4

Insert the new key into the new lock cylinder and turn it to the "Run" position. Depress the locking button on the side of the cylinder and slide it into the lock cylinder housing on the steering column. Rotate the key counterclockwise, while pushing in on the new cylinder, until it seats in the lock cylinder housing.

    5

Reinstall the steering column trim pieces and tilt lever. Plug the yellow air bag connectors back in and reinstall the lower instrument cluster trim. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition key to the run position while observing the air bag warning light on the dash. The light will flash seven times and go out when the air bag system rearms.
