Toyota Racing Development (TRD) developed shift lights that can be installed onto the instrument cluster of your Toyota vehicle. When it is safe for you to shift into the next gear, the shift light comes on. The shift light uses LEDs so they are brighter than halogen lights and last longer. The shift light can be mounted onto the dashboard for easy viewing.
Instructions
- 1
Park your Toyota vehicle and engage the parking brake. Turn off the engine.
2Open the hood and disconnect your Toyota vehicle's battery with a socket wrench.
3Lower the steering wheel. Remove the screws from the instrument cluster. Reach behind the cluster and disconnect its two connectors. Remove the cluster from the vehicle.
4Place the shift light onto the dashboard. Pry the top air conditioning (AC) vent off with a flat-head screwdriver. The AC vent is located on the top of the dashboard. Run the wires of the shift light down into the AC vent and pull them out from the instrument cluster area.
5Connect the black wire to any metal surface on the instrument cluster area, preferably a bolt as it is easier to connect the wire to it by wrapping the wiring around the bolt. This is the ground wire.
6Rotate the shifter knob counterclockwise and remove it. Pry off the clips from the shifter panel with a flat-head screwdriver and remove the panel. This will allow you to access the cigarette lighter's wiring components. Run the red wire from the instrument cluster down to the cigarette lighter and plug it into the cigarette lighter's wiring connection. This is the power wire. Reassemble the shifter panel and knob.
7Remove the fuse box panel to the left of the steering wheel using a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the OBDII plug. The shifter light's green wire is the tachometer wire and will be used to obtain the reading of the acceleration. Connect the green wire to the ninth pin on the OBDII plug. Reattach the fuse box panel.
8Reassemble the instrument cluster. The shift light comes with two screws you can drill into the dashboard to attach the light to your vehicle, but if you do not wish to damage your dashboard, you can use tape to secure the light to the vehicle. Reconnect the battery and close the hood.
