The 1991 Ford F-150 contains a door-lock actuator located within the door itself that allows you to operate the power locks. If the actuator is not working, you can easily replace it using only a few tools. The F-150's actuator is hidden behind the door's interior panel. Once the interior panel of the door is removed, you can access the actuator to remove it and install a replacement.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of your F-150 and disconnect the battery. Use a socket wrench to remove the negative cable from the F-150's battery.

    2

Remove the armrest's switch control-plate. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove it. Disconnect the plate's wiring connector. Pry off the side mirror cover as well. Remove the inside handle cover with a flat-head screwdriver.

    3

Use a putty knife to pry out all eight of the clips securing the interior panel to the F-150's door. Remove the four screws from the door panel as well with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the interior panel off the F-150's door.

    4

Remove the F-150's water shield to access the actuator.

    5

Use a socket wrench to unbolt the actuator from the door. Disconnect the actuator's wiring connector and remove it from the F-150's door.

    6

Place the new actuator onto the F-150's door and reattach the bolts and wiring connector. Reattach the water shield, the interior panel and all of the door components. Reconnect the battery and close the F-150's hood.
