Toyota sells car in 170 countries. They spend more money ($1 million an hour) on research and development than any other company in the world. Toyota has the highest loyalty rate of any auto manufacturer, and the highest rate of repeat business per household. The late model Toyotas, such as the 2002 Celica, use a coil on plug ignition system. This means, there is one coil allocated for each spark plug. This allows the coils to run cooler and give a lot hotter spark with better timing.
Instructions
- 1
Open the hood and remove the large plastic cover over the top of the engine. The cover has no mechanical value other than aesthetics. Remove the two 10 mm bolts with a socket.
2Remove the 10 mm bolt in each of the coil brackets using a wrench. The coils are in the center of the valve cover. They each have a wire connector and a single bolt securing them to the valve cover. Lift each of the coils out of the valve cover and off the spark plug. Lay the coils to the rear of the valve cover behind its particular cylinder.
3Remove all the spark plugs using the ratchet, extension and spark plug socket. Turn the plugs counterclockwise to remove them.
4Gap the new spark plugs at 0.042 inch with the gapping tool. Install all the spark plugs by threading them in clockwise and snugging them to 13 foot-pounds of torque. Install the coils by inserting the spark plug boot into the spark plug hole and push down on the coil until the boot snaps on the spark plug.
5Install the bolt in each of the coils and tighten it. Install the plastic cover and the two bolts and tighten snugly.
