During the course of owning your BMW E30, you may need to troubleshoot the car's auxiliary fan. Over time, electrical components that are connected to the fan as well as the motor for the fan itself can break and wear down, especially on an older BMW platform such as the E30. Fortunately, testing the AC fan on high and low is a quick and straightforward procedure.

Instructions

    1

Turn on your E30's electrical system and engine by inserting the key into the ignition and turning it all the way so that your engine is running. The air conditioning components will not function unless the engine is operating.

    2

Turn the dial at the center of the dashboard for the fan so that the fan begins to run.

    3

Engage the knob in the lowest speed position first, which is all the way to the left. Wait momentarily for the fan to engage.

    4

Slowly move the knob to the right to increase the fan speed. Turn the knob until the highest fan speed is engaged.

    5

Listen for the sound of the fan to increase in pitch and speed to ensure that the fan is working properly.

    6

Check the fuse for the air conditioning fan by opening the glove box of your E30 and locating the fuse. Refer to the guide of fuses that is printed on the fuse box cover. The specific location of the fuse can vary between E30 models depending on the trim level and production year. Replace the fuse if it is blown, as a broken fuse can cause the fan to stop working.
