In the 1970s, manufacturers began releasing vehicles that had very basic computer controls to operate high-tech-at-the-time fuel injection and electronic ignition systems. Through the 1980s, these computers became more complex, and by the 1990s, these computers controlled or monitored nearly every engine function. The 1993 Protege used an engine control unit, which some people incorrectly call a powertrain control module, to monitor various sensors throughout the vehicle to adjust the fuel and ignition systems. Relative to more modern automotive computers, the 1993 Proteges ECU is a simple component and requires no additional programming after installation.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Connect a memory saver to the vehicle in accordance with the memory savers instruction manual. This helps preserve your clock settings and radio presets. If you do not have a memory saver available, you need to reprogram these electronic components after reinstalling the new engine control module.
2Open the Proteges hood and loosen the negative battery cable end using a combination wrench. Pull the negative cable end off the battery.
3Adjust the passengers and drivers seats as far back as they will go to give you easier access to the underside of the dashboard.
4Find the two front-most center console panels, located under the dashboard. Remove the two small screws and one standard-sized screw from each console panel using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove both console panels, exposing the engine control unit.
5Remove the one bolt and nut from the drivers side of the ECU using a ratchet and socket, then remove the three bolts from the passengers side of the ECU. Pull the ECU out just enough to access its wiring harnesses and disconnect the harnesses.
Installation
- 6
Plug the wiring harnesses into their receptacles on the new ECU. The harnesses are all different sizes to prevent incorrect connection.
7Guide the ECU into place, sliding the mounting stud through the bolt hole in the front, drivers side corner of the ECU. Align the remaining four bolt holes.
8Tighten the four ECU-retaining bolts and one nut by hand, then snug them down with a ratchet and socket. Reinstall each front-most center console panel and snug the two retaining screws on each panel with a Phillips screwdriver.
9Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the cable end with a combination wrench.
