Replacing the timing belt gear on your Nissan Z31, also referred to as a Nissan 300ZX, is necessary if the timing belt gear malfunctions or is damaged. The timing belt ensures the engine runs properly; damage to the timing belt or timing belt gear can result in damage the engine. Timing belts are inexpensive, and the replacement process is fairly straightforward. The only difficult aspect of the removal process is removing all of the other engine components to access the timing belt gear.

Instructions

    1

Lift the Z31's hood. Use a socket wrench to disconnect the battery.

    2

Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the fan and radiator shroud.

    3

Remove the screws from the fan with a Phillips screwdriver, and remove the fan from the engine compartment.

    4

Use a socket wrench to loosen the bolts from the engine belts and crank pulley. Remove those components from the engine compartment as well.

    5

Pry off the timing belt cover. Depending on the year of year Z31, you may need to remove a few bolts from the timing belt cover before you can use a flat-head screwdriver to pry it off.

    6

Remove the bolts from the water pump and pull it out by hand. Be careful not to spill coolant onto the engine's components.

    7

Use a socket wrench to rotate the crank at the front of the engine. This will rotate the timing belt. Stop when you can see the timing belt gear.

    8

Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt from the timing belt gear and remove it from the timing belt.
