The Nissan X-Trail is a car-based -- or crossover -- sport utility vehicle that is powered by a transverse, front-mounted four-cylinder engine that powers the front wheels. A four-wheel-drive system is available as an option. The X-Trail's large, vertical taillight assemblies are mounted high on the vehicle body and combine the functions of stop lights, parking lights, turn signals and back-up lights. The taillight assembly must be removed for replacement or to replace individual bulbs.

Instructions

Remove Taillight

    1

    Open the rear hatch door.

    2

Remove the two retaining screws on the edge of the taillight assembly next to the door opening with a 10 mm socket and a -inch drive ratchet wrench. Place the screws aside.

    3

Grasp the taillight assembly near the top with your fingers. Pull straight out on the assembly to release the locating pins from the grommets mounted in the vehicle body. Rock the light assembly back and forth gently to release the locating pins from the grommets, if necessary. Pull the bottom of the assembly outwards once the top has been loosened form the vehicle body.

    4

Hold the taillight assembly away from the car body as far as the bulb wiring will allow. Twist the bulb socket on the back side of the assembly for the combination stop and parking light in a counterclockwise direction. Pull the socket straight out of the back of the taillight. Remove the sockets for the turn signal bulb and the back-up light bulb in the same manner. Remove the taillight assembly from the vehicle.

Taillight Installation

    5

Push the back-up bulb socket into the bottom hole on the backside of the replacement taillight assembly. Twist the socket in a clockwise direction to lock the it into place. Install the turn-signal bulb socket and the combination stop and parking bulb socket into the taillight in the same manner.

    6

Line up the locating pins that protrude from the back side of the taillight into the grommets mounted in the vehicle body. Check to make sure the bulb wiring is positioned correctly and is not being pinched.

    7

Push the face of the taillight with both hands until the locating pins are fully seated in the grommets and the front of the assembly is flush with the vehicle body.

    8

Replace the two retaining screws into the mounting holes in the edge of the taillight and tighten them with the 10 mm socket and ratchet. Close the hatch door.
