Dodge released the Intrepid in the 1993 model year and it featured Chryslers newest innovations, Cab-Forward design. The 1996 Intrepid came standard with a 161-horsepower, 3.3-liter V-6 engine and had an available 214-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine. The 1996 Intrepid was an oddity in the automotive realm, as it was a front-driven car, but the engine sat longitudinally in the engine compartment, much like a rear-wheel drive vehicle. This makes getting to the transmissions input speed sensor a much easier task than it is on a transverse-mounted engine, as there is more room to work and fewer wires in the way.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Lift the front of the Intrepid with a floor jack and slide jack stands under the vehicles subframe. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.

    2

Crawl under the front of the vehicle and position yourself directly under the drivers side of the transmission. Look about halfway up the drivers side of the transmission case and find the input speed sensor, which is above and to the rear of the drivers side axle shaft.

    3

Unplug the wiring harness from the input speed sensor. Check that the seal did not fall off the wiring harness as you unplugged it. If the seal did fall of, Press it back onto the wiring harness.

    4

Remove the input speed sensor from the transmission, using a ratchet and deep-well socket.

Installation

    5

Thread the new input speed senor into the transmission case by hand, then tighten it to between 180 and 300 inch-pounds, using a, inch-pound torque wrench and socket.

    6

Plug the wiring harness into the speed sensors receptacle.

    7

Raise the vehicle off the jack stands and remove them from under the subframe. Lower the Intrepid to the ground.
