There can be hundreds of problems that cause the "Check Engine" light to go on; many of them may not be threatening to the life of your car, but how do you figure out what they are? Most Volkswagen vehicles are equipped with an "Engine Coolant Level" light; when lit, it means you may need to add more coolant. Once coolant is added though the light may remain on and need to be reset.
Instructions
- 1
Locate the coolant reservoir and refill coolant. Most Volkswagen coolant reservoirs are located in the right rear of the engine. The ECL light should go off now, if not follow to Step 2.
2Remove both the positive and negative terminals from the battery.
3Wait 30 seconds and then hold the leads together for a total of another 30 seconds.
4Allow the battery and leads to sit, disconnected, for up to an hour.
5Reconnect the leads to the battery terminals after the allotted time has passed.
6Put the key and turn the ignition, but do not start the car. Allow it to sit for up to a minute while the computer relearns the engine parts.
7Start the car and make sure all unnecessary dashboard lights are off.
