How to Remove a Power Steering Pump Pulley for a 1995 Mustang

Ford Motor Company introduced the 1964-1/2 Mustang, midway through the 1964 model year. The 1995 Mustang was equipped with a 3.8-liter V-6 engine, capable of producing 145-horsepower. Two-different versions of the 5.0-liter V-8 engine were installed into the 1995 Mustang GT, Mustang GTS, and Mustang Cobra. The power steering pump is located on the front of the engine. The shaft mounted pulley is usually removed to replace it on a new power steering pump.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood on the Mustang. Install a 3/8-inch-drive ratchet into the hole provided in the tensioner assembly. Depress the tensioner assembly and remove the serpentine belt from the power steering pulley. It is not necessary to remove the entire serpentine belt.

    2

Clamp the two "C" shaped coupling halves from the power steering puller onto the nub protruding from the front of the power steering pulley. Install the cylindrical sleeve from the kit over the coupling halves to lock the coupling halves together.

    3

Insert the larger removal bolt from the kit into the center of the coupling halves, and turn the bolt clockwise. Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket on the hex head of the bolt to turn the bolt through the coupling assembly. Continue turning the bolt until the power steering pulley slides off of the steering pump shaft. The pulley is simply held on by friction and should pop off, assuming there are no burrs or nicks in the steering pump shaft. Remove the coupling assembly when finished.

    4

Install the new pulley onto the power steering shaft, with the nub facing outward from the engine. Install the two coupling halves around the nub on the front of the pulley. Install the cylindrical sleeve over the two pulley halves. Install the smaller bolt through the coupling assembly and into the steering pump shaft.

    5

Turn the hex head on the installation bolt with a ratchet and socket. The wide head on the bolt will push the coupling assembly and the pulley onto the steering shaft. Continue turning the bolt until the power steering pulley is completely pressed against the inner race of the steering pump shaft. Remove the bolt and the coupling assembly from the power steering pulley.

    6

Depress the tensioner assembly with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and install the serpentine belt over the power steering pulley. Check that the serpentine belt is still centered on every pulley on the front of the engine. If the belt is off-center on any of the pulleys, depress the tensioner halfway and make the proper adjustments.
