How to Remove the Rear Speakers in a 2002 Malibu

The Chevrolet Malibu began production in the 1964 model year and ran consecutively until 1983 before falling prey to the fuel economy trend. Nearly a decade and a half later, Chevrolet reintroduced the famous nameplate for the 1997 model year. By 2002, the Malibu had once again become a staple of the Chevrolet lineup. Due to the economical pricing needs of the Malibu's target audience, the 2002 Malibu was not equipped with premium stereo speakers. However, you can remove the factory speakers and install upgraded ones in less than an hour.

Instructions

    1

Climb into the back seat of the Malibu with a trim tool, Phillips screwdriver and replacement speakers.

    2

Pry the rear window trim out, using the trim tool, to expose the rear speaker mounting screws. Set the trim aside.

    3

Remove the four speaker mounting screws from both speakers, using the Phillips screwdriver. Place all the screws together for ease of re-installation.

    4

Lift the left speaker from the rear package shelf. Unplug the wiring harness from the side of the speaker. Set the old speaker aside.

    5

Plug the wiring harness into the replacement speaker. Lower the replacement speaker into the rear package shelf, aligning the screw holes in the speaker with the screw holes in the rear package shelf.

    6

Lift the right speaker from the package shelf. Unplug the wiring harness from the side of the speaker. Set the old speaker aside.

    7

Plug the wiring harness into the replacement speaker. Lower the replacement speaker into the rear package shelf, aligning the screw holes in the speaker with the screw holes in the rear package shelf.

    8

Reinstall the four mounting screws into both of the replacement speakers using the Phillips screwdriver. Tighten each screw to 27 pound-inches, using a torque wrench. Snap the rear window trim panel back in place by hand.
