The 2002 Honda Civic came with several engines and had several models, including the DX. The procedure for the water pump on the DX with the 1.8-, 2.0-, 2.2- and 2.4-liter engines is the same for that on DX-model Civics of the years 2001 through 2005. Other models have the water pump under the timing belt cover. You may need to replace the water pump if it leaks or if the bearings malfunction. When working with the engine cooling system, always ensure that the engine is cool before you start.

Instructions

    1

Slide the drain pan under the radiator petcock. Open the petcock and remove the radiator cap to allow the coolant to drain. Discard the coolant in an appropriate manner --- it is illegal to pour coolant on the ground as it damages the environment, and it is deadly to animals.

    2

Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner toward the center of the engine with the appropriate socket to loosen tension on the belt. Lift the belt off the pulleys, then allow the tensioner to gently rotate back into place.

    3

Remove the water pump retaining bolts, using the appropriate socket. Remove the pump from the engine. Clean the pump-mounting surface on the engine with the plastic scraper and shop rags.

    4

Insert the O-ring on the new water pump into the pump's groove. Insert the mounting bolts into the water pump, then line the pump up on the block. Thread the bolts in by hand as far as they will go. Tighten them firmly with the socket.

    5

Close the radiator petcock. Fill the radiator with 50/50 antifreeze or with the mixture of antifreeze and water recommended by your owner's manual for your geographical area. Start the vehicle. Check for water leaks and allow the vehicle to come to normal operating temperature. As soon as the thermostat opens, the coolant in the radiator will drop. At this point you can top off the radiator with water. Install the radiator cap.
