The alternator on the 1994 Isuzu Trooper supplies the electricity to the accessories when the automobile is running. When the alternator fails, it will start to use the power from the battery. When the only power available is coming from the battery, it will drain quickly, and the engine will stall. That is why it is important that you remove and replace the alternator in the Trooper as soon as you know there is a problem. This information pertains specifically to the V-belt installation. It takes about an hour to replace the alternator using a few basic tools.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal with a combination wrench and pull it off the battery post. Disconnect the terminal plug from the back of the alternator. Disconnect the battery lead from the alternator using a wrench to remove the nut.

    2

Loosen the pivot bolt and locking bolt on the alternator using a socket and ratchet. Pivot the alternator rearward to relieve tension from the drive belt and lift the belt off the alternator pulley once the tension is off the belt. Remove the bolt securing the air pump bracket to the back of the alternator using a socket and ratchet if applicable.

    3

Remove the pivot bolts and bracket from the alternator using a socket and ratchet. Remove the nut and bolt from the bottom of the alternator using a socket and ratchet. You may have to hold the bolt with a combination wrench while you remove the nut to keep it from turning.

    4

Remove the alternator from the Trooper's engine compartment. You might have to wiggle it to loosen it enough to come out of the bracket. Place the new alternator into the mounting bracket. Install the lower nut and bolt and hand-tighten them. Place the belt on the alternator pulley.

    5

Attach the adjusting bracket and pivot bolt to the alternator and tighten by hand. Attach the air pump bracket to the back of the alternator. Tighten the bracket bolt with a socket and ratchet if you removed one previously. Apply tension to the alternator drive belt and tighten the adjusting bolt with a socket and ratchet.

    6

Depress the alternator belt with your finger on the longest span to check the belt tension. You should be able to depress the belt about -inch on the longest span with your finger. If there is more than a half-inch of movement in the belt, tighten the alternator adjuster belt until the you feel the correct tension. Tighten the lower mounting bolt to 26 foot-pounds using a torque wrench.

    7

Tighten the pivot bolt to 18 foot-pounds using the torque wrench. If you replaced the air pump bracket, torque that bolt to 18 foot-pounds. Connect the wires to the alternator by plugging them in. Attach the battery lead to the alternator and tighten the nut with a wrench.

    8

Connect the negative terminal to the battery post and tighten the nut using a wrench. Start the Trooper and check to make sure that the alternator is working properly and recharging the battery.
