When working with the fuel system on a Chevrolet S-10, you must always relieve the fuel pressure. The fuel pressure regulator regulates the fuel pressure going through the system and through the injectors. The fuel injectors require a specific pressure, which may vary slightly from year to year, but is most commonly around 44 p.s.i.

Locate the relay box near the driver's side fenderwell. Lift off the cover and, using the diagram on the underside of the cover, locate the fuel pump relay. Pull the relay out of its socket. If you can't get it out with your fingers, you may use the needlenose pliers. Start the vehicle and allow it to run until it stalls. If it won't start, crank it over five or six times to relieve the fuel pressure.
2Remove the fuel return pipe from the regulator using the appropriate line wrench. Discard the O-ring. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the regulator using the screwdriver.
3Remove the fuel return pipe clamp using the appropriate socket. Remove the pressure regulator attaching screw, lift the regulator off the manifold and discard the O-ring.
4Lubricate the new O-rings with clean engine oil. Install them on the regulator and the pipe. Install the new pressure regulator on the manifold.
5Coat the regulator attaching screws with threadlocking compound. Install the screws and tighten them to 31 inch-pounds of torque. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the regulator.
6Ensure that the O-ring is in position on the fuel return pipe. Install the return pipe and tighten the fitting to 22 foot-pounds of torque. Reinstall the fuel return pipe clamp and tighten the nut firmly. Reinstall the fuel pump relay. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
