The automotive mirror made its first appearance as a rearview mirror in Ray Harrouns Indianapolis 500-winning Marmon Wasp. This led to the introduction of rearview mirrors in all Marmon vehicles, starting in 1912. The side-view mirror was a later addition, but it is just as important to automobiles. In many cases, several trim panels may obstruct access to a side-view mirrors retaining hardware, making its replacement difficult. Fortunately, replacing the 2004 GMC Yukons side mirror requires removing just one small trim panel.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Open the Yukons front door and find the upper extension trim panel -- the triangular panel behind the side mirror. Pry outward on the front part of the upper extension trim panel to disengage the upper retaining clips. Pull the panel upward and off the door.

    2

Remove the two nuts securing the mirror to the door, using a ratchet and socket. If equipped with power mirrors, press and hold the unlocking button on the power mirror wiring harness, then unplug it from the Yukons wiring harness.

    3

Pull the mirror off the door and remove the insulator -- the rubber, triangular component located behind the mirror.

Installation

    4

Set the rubber insulator on the mirror, guiding the mirrors studs through the bolt holes in the insulator.

    5

Guide the mirrors wiring harness through the large hole between the bolt holes in the door, if equipped with power mirrors. Position the mirror on the door, guiding the mirrors studs through the bolt holes in the door, then hand-tighten the mirror retaining nuts to 6 to 7 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.

    6

Reconnect the power mirror's wiring harness, if equipped, into the Yukons wiring harness.

    7

Guide the tabs on the bottom of the upper extension trim panel into the slots in the door panel. Line up the clips on the rear of the upper extension trim panel with the slots in the door frame and press the panel toward the door frame until the clips snap into place.
