The automotive industry is a funny creature; both resistant to change and adaptable to it, the best automakers have a talent for grasping the finer points of public opinion and government mandates, and making the best of them. Evidence the thermoplastic bumper covers that started showing up in the 1980s. The bumper covers like those used by the 1992 Integra hid the massive, ugly bars in use since the 1970s, and used them as a foundation for part of the car's signature styling cues. But bumpers are ultimately the car's first line of defense against damage, encouraging wise manufacturers like Honda to make them fairly simple to replace.

Instructions

    1

Remove the two screws that secure the front turn signals to the front bumper. Behind the turn signals you'll find two 12 mm bolts; remove them. Look inside the front portion of the wheel-well on either side, and remove the two screws you find there. On some models, a rubber flap may cover the screws to protect them from the weather.

    2

Crawl under the car, and remove the nine bolts that secure the bumper cover and the bottom lip to the frame. From the front of the car, carefully pull the bumper cover forward and lay it on a blanket to ward off scratches and further damage. Remove the nine screws that secure the bumper reinforcement to the frame; you'll find four on each side, and one in the middle near the license plate frame. Pull the reinforcement and the Styrofoam backing material.

    3

Remove the main bumper support if you're replacing it due to damage. Re-installation is the reverse of removal. Install the new bumper, and torque the bumper fasteners to 17 foot-pounds. Slide the Styrofoam over the bumper, then the reinforcement, and reinstall the nine screws. Install the bumper cover and the screws, and torque the bolts to 10 foot-pounds.
