The 2005 Honda Accord was available with either a 2.4-liter inline-four cylinder, or a 3.0-liter V-6 engine. Both engines use a single serpentine belt to drive the water pump and all other accessories. Both engines use spring-loaded automatic belt tensioners, but the replacement procedure is slightly different for each engine.

Instructions

Four Cylinder Engine

    1

Park the Accord on a level surface and set the parking brake.

    2

Locate the tensioner next to the valve cover at the front of the engine. There should be a sticker with a belt routing diagram on the radiator cover or strut tower. If not, use a pencil and paper to draw a diagram of the belt routing.

    3

Attach a ratchet and socket to the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley. Rotate the tensioner in a clockwise direction to relieve tension on the belt. Slide the belt off the tensioner pulley and remove it from the engine.

    4

Thread the new belt through the pulleys, saving the tensioner for last. Rotate the tensioner again and slide the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Release the tensioner and remove the ratchet and socket.

V-6 Engine

    5

Locate the tensioner next to the alternator, near the center of the engine.

    6

Look for a routing diagram or draw one.

    7

Attach a ratchet and socket to the bolt in the center of the tensioner and rotate it in a counterclockwise position. Remove the belt.

    8

Thread the new belt back on, finishing at the tensioner. Rotate the tensioner and finish installing the belt.
