The smog pump on Ford vehicles is an emissions control device that is part of the vehicle's air injection system (AIS). The smog pump sends oxygen into the exhaust and through the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. An engine vacuum pump is a tool used to evacuate excess oil buildup on and around the engine's manifold. They are sometimes used when boost pressure in the crankcase causes oil leaks through the mating surface. If modified, a Ford smog pump can be converted into an engine vacuum pump.

Instructions

    1

Remove the four retaining bolts on the outside cover plate with a socket set.

    2

Slip a utility razor between the smog pump's housing and the cover plate. Tap the razor gently with a small hammer to force it through the seal if need be.

    3

Remove all of the foam filter coating shoved inside the housing. The foam will actually interfere with the evacuation of the oil from the crankcase.

    4

Snip the wire leads connected to the check valve with wire strippers and cover with electrical tape. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws holding the check valve in place and remove it completely. The check valve is not needed. Tap out the pintle, the small round metal piece, mounted under the check valve with the hammer.

    5

Remove the screws holding the motor cap in place. Clean the around the motor with alcohol and an old toothbrush. Set the can back in place and replace the retaining screws.

    6

Place a small dab of silicone sealant around the housing and the cover plate and then attach the two. Slip the plate bolts back in place and tighten them with the socket set.

    7

Insert a grommet in the hole where the pintle was mounted and then run a single piece of tubing through the grommet. This will serve as a drain line that will flow into a catch pan.

    8

Connect another piece of tubing with a hose clamp to the inlet tube on the smog pump.
