The Ford Econoline compact van was introduced in 1961. The Econoline became a full-size van in 1968 and shares many parts with the F-Series trucks. The Econoline is now known as the E-Series and is available in 1/2-, 3/4-, and 1-ton models in a variety of configurations, including cargo, passenger and RV chassis. The 1994 E-350 1-ton van was equipped with the Dana 60 or Dana 70 rear axle, depending on whether it had single or dual rear wheels.

Instructions

    1

Park the E-350 on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake. Raise the rear of the E-350 with the floor jack and place the jack stands under the frame rails. Lower the floor jack until the vehicle rests securely on the jack stands. Remove the floor jack.

    2

Move under the rear of the E-350 and look to the lower right of the differential cover. The axles model number is stamped into the housing just to the right of the cover. You may need to clean the area with a wire brush. Single rear wheel models use the Dana 60. Dual wheels use the Dana 70.

    3

Look at where the cover mounts onto the housing. If the top-right and lower-right angled sides of the cover match the contours of the housing, it is a Dana 60. If the housing is slightly larger than the cover, it is a Dana 70. This is because they both use the same cover, but the Dana 70 housing is slightly bigger because it has a larger ring gear.

    4

Clean the rear of the right axle tube with a wire brush. You will see a four-digit number followed by a six-digit number. The six-digit number is the bill of material number and can be used to identify the axle by calling a Ford dealer or any business that sells rear axle parts.
