Vapor lock is a problem caused in internal combustion engines when fuel prematurely vaporizes in the fuel pump or gas line. This can prevent fuel from being properly transferred to the carburetor, starving the engine of fuel and preventing it from running or starting. Vapor lock most commonly occurs when an engine is overheated, especially after the engine has been turned off for a short period of time. A locked gas line can stop your car from starting, but it is a problem that can be fixed with relative ease.
Instructions
- 1
Pour a small amount of water over the fuel pump and gas line. Do not pour water on the distributor, since it is too hot to safely expose to cold water.
2Press gently on the gas pedal to open the throttle a little bit. Maintain steady pressure, and don't press too hard or you risk flooding the engine.
3Turn the key and allow the engine to turn over until it starts. You may have to crank the engine for some time while the carburetor fills with fuel.
4Maintain steady pressure on the gas pedal until the engine runs smoothly.
