The Land Rover model vehicles, such as the Freelander, Defender, LR models and the Range Rovers come equipped with a gift shift lever that is attached to the shifting linkage by a E-clip. The E-clip must be removed before the gear shift lever can be removed. Excessive use and harsh gear changing of the T-shaped gear shift handle can damage the gear shift lever and require that it be removed and replaced. The entire shift lever process will only require

Instructions

    1

Place the Land Rover on a level surface and set the parking brake. Place wheel chocks in front of the rear wheels and behind the rear wheels.

    2

Turn the ignition key to the accessory position. Press the locking button on the side of the gear shift handle. Move the gear shift handle to the location between reverse and park. Leave the shift lever in this position. This will put the shift lever at the highest possible point and enable the E-clip to be accessible. Release the locking button.

    3

Locate the Land Rovers gear selector diagram cap at the bottom of the shift lever. Slide the tip of a flathead screwdriver under the gear selector diagram cap and pry the cap off of the base of the shift lever.

    4

Hold the gear selector diagram cap up with one hand, and shine a flashlight under the cap to locate the E-clip that connects the gear shift lever to the transmission linkage cam. The E-clip is a small clip that is designed in the shape of an "E," located directly under the diagram cap.

    5

Tap around the top of the E-clip with the metal part of the flathead screwdriver to loosen the E-clip from the linkage cam. Grab the E-clip with the needle nose pliers and pull the E-clip off of the gear shift lever and the linkage cam. Place the E-clip in the floorboard.

    6

Press inward on the locking button on the side of the gear lever handle again. Pull straight up on the gear handle with your hands. The gear lever will pull out of the center console.
