How to Replace a Caliper in a Nissan Maxima

A sports car like the Nissan Maxima needs good brakes. If anything like the calipers become worn or cracked, they must be replaced. This is a complex and important task, so don't perform it yourself without talking to an expert first.

Instructions

Removing the Old Caliper

Raise and secure the car on a jack stand. Remove the wheel for the caliper you must replace.

Detach the parking brake cable and the lock spring if you are removing a rear caliper.

Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper at the fitting bolt. Discard the washers on the bolt. Plug the hose with a piece of rubber to prevent contaminating the brake fluid.

Remove the caliper pin bolts. The caliper should now pivot up away from the rotor and slide off of the pin sleeve.

Installing the New Caliper

Apply a silicone-based grease on the mounting support where the pads will make contact.

Install the new caliper into position. Install new pads, shims and pad springs with it. Reattach the mounting bolts and torque them to between 16 foot pounds and 23 foot pounds.

Connect the brake hose to the caliper, using new washers with the connecting bolt/flare nut. Torque it to 12 foot pounds to 14 foot pounds.

Reattach the wheel to the car.

Bleed the brake system to remove air. Connect a transparent vinyl tube to the bleeder valve and open the valve while another person holds down on the pedal.

Lower the car and set the brake pads. Press the pedal several times until firm. Test the brakes on the road.
