The crankshaft position sensor, or CKP, on a 2001 Mercedes-Benz C240 is located on the right-rear side of the engine block, just behind the drivers side cylinder head, adjacent to the firewall. This sensor is part of the computer-controlled engine management system, designed to maximize the engines fuel economy and performance. This sensor sends information to the engine control module, or ECM, about the crankshafts rotational position in relation to the engine block. The ECM uses this information to determine how to effectively manage the engine. When the crankshaft positions sensor fails, the engine may not start at all. Once the sensor is replaced, it must be re-synced with the ECM using the Mercedes-Benz Star Diagnosis scan tool, or an appropriate equivalent.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Shut down the engine and apply the parking brake. Open the hood and allow the engine to cool at least one hour before proceeding.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery terminal, using a battery terminal wrench. Pull up on the engine compartment paneling until it pops loose. Remove the engine compartment paneling and set it aside.

    3

Remove the corrugated hose from both sides of the air cleaner assembly. Detach the air cleaner housing from both sides of the cylinder head cover. Disconnect the intake tube near the throttle body. Lift the entire air cleaner assembly up and off of the engine.

    4

Unplug the sensors electrical connector and remove its retaining bolt using a metric socket and a ratchet. Remove the sensor, using a twisting and pulling motion.

Installation

    5

Coat the new sensor with a light film of engine oil and install it into the engine block, using a twisting and pushing motion.

    6

Install the sensors retaining bolt using a metric socket and a ratchet. Torque the bolt to 5.9 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench.

    7

Reconnect the sensors electrical connector. Set the air cleaner assembly into position on the engine. Reconnect the intake tube to the throttle body. Reconnect the air cleaner assembly to both sides of the cylinder head cover.

    8

Reconnect the corrugated hose to both sides of the air cleaner assembly. Set the engine compartment paneling into place and gently press down on it until it snaps into position. Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a battery terminal wrench.

    9

Connect the Mercedes-Benz Star Diagnosis scan tool to the vehicles diagnostic data port and perform the crankshaft position sensor re-initialization procedure.
