Dodge Neons utilize an electrical engine fan to draw cold outside air into the engine bay, and cool engine coolant circulating through the radiator. Unlike older designs which utilize a mechanical fan driven off the water pump, electrical fans are driven by an electrical signal, either from the engine's computer or a coolant temperature sensor. A faulty engine fan could cause you Dodge Neon to overheat, which in turn could cause serious damage to your engine.

Disconnecting the Battery

Begin by disconnecting the battery. Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal, by loosening the retaining bolt and pulling the clamp off the terminal. Secure the ground cable away from the battery so it cannot accidently contact the negative terminal.

Removing the Electrical Connections to the Fan Assembly

Next you must separate the wiring harness from the two fan motors. Remove the electrical connectors from the fan motors, by using a flat blade screwdriver to pry the retaining tabs away from the connectors. Then pull the plastic connectors off the fan motors.

Removing the Fan Assembly from the Vehicle

The last step is removing the fan assembly from the vehicle. Using an appropriate sized socket, remove the bolts that connect the fan assembly to the radiator. There will be four bolts on the top of the radiator and two on the bottom. Lift the fan assembly straight up to remove it from the engine bay.
