The catalytic converter on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee is designed to be bolted front and rear to flanges on the exhaust system. If the reason for replacing the converter is an internal failure, a rich mixture is the cause. Make sure the cause of the rich mixture is corrected prior to the new installation. A rich mixture will overheat and burn out a converter in short order.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the front of the Jeep using the floor jack. Place a jack stand under each side of the frame. Lower the Jeep so it rests on the stands.
2Remove the four bolts in the front and rear flanges using a socket. Spread the exhaust pipe away from the flange using a screwdriver so the converter drops down.
3Install the new converter with the arrow on the side pointing toward the engine. Make sure the gaskets are in place on the front and rear flanges.
4Install the four bolts in both flanges and tighten to 40 foot-pounds of torque. Lower the Jeep Cherokee to the ground.
