How to Program a PATS Key

Many vehicles are now equipped with extra security features, such as the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) key. This key works to prevent vehicle theft by disabling your vehicle's starter unless it's specifically started using the PATS key programmed to your specific vehicle. In short, the PATS key prevents thieves from stealing your car unless they have your key. When you purchase your vehicle, it comes with two PATS keys; you can program an additional key on your own. If something happens to your keys and you need a new master key, you're required to take your vehicle to a dealership; a specialized mechanical procedure is required to program master keys.

Instructions

    1

Add an additional PATS key to your vehicle by locating both of your original master keys; you must have both keys. Without both keys you can't perform this process yourself.

    2

Get into your car and insert one of your original keys into the ignition. Turn the key to the "ON" position (for at least one second) and back "OFF" almost immediately.

    3

Remove the key from the ignition and insert the second master key. You must insert the second key within 10 seconds of removing the first key. Turn the key to the "ON" position before turning it back to the "OFF" position. The key must be in the "ON" position for at least one second but not longer than 10. Take the key out of the ignition.

    4

Insert the new, unprogrammed key into the ignition within 20 seconds of removing the second key. Turn the key to the "ON" position for at least one second before turning it to the "OFF" position. If you've successfully programmed the new key, the security light in your vehicle will light up for three seconds. Add additional keys by repeating this process.
