Wiring the original-equipment stereo for your 2001 GMC Jimmy in a correct fashion is a critical part of the overall installation process. The vehicle's stereo wiring consists of several key elements, which give the unit's constant and switched power, the electrical ground, speaker wires, dimmer signal and radio antenna. Although the unit itself requires many wiring connections to operate properly, all of the needed wires, with exception of the antenna, are conveniently assembled into a single proprietary connector.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Open the Jimmy's hood and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery's - terminal, using a socket and ratchet.
2Remove the single hex-head screw from the top inside area of the instrument cluster, using a socket and socket driver. Adjust the steering wheel to the lowest position.
3Examine the knee panel, located below the dashboard on the driver's side, and remove the two hex-head screws positioned below the steering wheel.
4Pull the knee panel down enough to expose the two hex-head screws that secure the instrument panel trim bezel; remove the two screws with a socket driver and socket.
5Grasp the lower edge of the trim bezel, to the right of the stereo unit, and unsnap the trim piece from the dash. Continue to move along the perimeter of the trim bezel until the piece is separated from the instrument panel. If the vehicle features a small rear wiper control switch to the left of the radio unit, push the switch through the front of the trim panel and disconnect the electrical connector.
6Prop the trim bezel over the top of the dash to gain access to the stereo; this will allow you to remove the unit without having to disconnect the remaining accessory connections on the left side.
7Remove the two hex-head screws securing the stereo unit to the instrument panel, using a socket, extension and ratchet, or socket driver.
8Slide the unit from the instrument panel to expose the wire harness connector and connected antenna cable.
9Disconnect the harness connector and antenna cable from the rear of the stereo. Remove the stereo from the vehicle.
Installation
- 10
Connect the harness connector to the rear of the stereo unit. Take note that the harness connector will only insert into the rear of the radio a certain way, eliminating the possibility of accidentally reversing the connection. Connect the antenna cable to the rear of the unit.
11Slide the unit into the dash opening. Secure the unit to the instrument panel using the original screws.
12Position the trim bezel over the instrument panel. Feed the electrical connector for the rear wiper control through the corresponding accessory opening.
13Connect the electrical connector to the rear of the wiper control switch. Press-fit the control switch to the accessory opening on the trim bezel.
14Align the trim bezel against the instrument panel and press-fit the piece in place.
15Replace the two hex-head screws that secure the lower half of the trim bezel to the instrument panel, followed by the single screw for the upper area above the gauge cluster.
16Replace the two hex-head screws that secure the knee panel.
17Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery to finish the installation process.
