When the window gets broken in a '99 Grand Am, it can be quite expensive to take to the dealer or other car repair shop to fix. However, it is actually a simple matter to remove the old glass from the window to get it ready for the new glass. This project should take around 40 minutes to an hour to complete, and requires tools that are commonly found around the house.

Instructions

    1

Remove the door panel cover from your '99 Grand Am. Near the door release handle is a covered screw. Uncover the screw and unscrew the screw. Pull the cover away from the door handle. Use a screwdriver to pop out the locking mechanism with a flat head screw driver. Pull out slowly and set aside.

    2

Unscrew the screw from under the Grand Am's door loop. Carefully pull the bottom corner of the panel away from the car with your fingers. Unclip all door connectors. If some break, they are fairly cheap to replace. Pull on the panel until the panel is a few inches away from the door, but not completely detached. Unclip all electrical connectors. Pull the panel completely away from the door.

    3

Peel aside the plastic sheeting that covers the inside of the door. Set aside. Locate all of the door/window clips that hold the window into place. There should be about 8 to 9 clips. Unclip the glass from the clips. Locate the clip attached to the level that controls the level of the window. Loosen it so the new window can fit.

    4

Remove any glass pieces or glass shards from the previous window. Use your fingers or a vacuum with a tube attachment. Wear gloves when handling any glass. For shattered windows, you will probably need to use both. If the glass you are removing is a whole sheet, you can ignore this step.

    5

Remove the weather stripping rubber piece from the top of the window frame. You will probably need to use a scraper or a flat head screwdriver for this step. Be patient, this will take a little time. Try and keep the strip together, as you can use it again for the new window.

    6

Slide the new window down into the gap where it should go. If there are any bolts in the way, unscrew them so that the window can slide in. Take the glass back out and set aside. Wipe the door down with a wet cloth. You can now install the new window.
