How To Disable Shortcut Icon Arrow Overlay in Windows XP and Windows 7 Desktop Item

By Windows default Setting, each shortcut file will have an arrow icon overlay to indicate that it's a pointer to another folder, file or application. You can change it or remove the shortcut arrow using one of the steps below.

To Disable Shortcut Icon Arrow Overlay in Windows XP
And Windows 7 Desktop Item

Run Registry Editor (RegEdit).
Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile
Delete the "IsShortcut" registry value in the right pane.

Some other type of documents and files may be shortcut arrow on their icons too. To remove the shortcut arrow overlay image on these icons, navigate to each of the following registry keys and Delete the "IsShortcut" to deactivate shortcut arrow.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ConferenceLink
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DocShortCut
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WSHFile

Exit from Registry Editor.

Restart Explorer for changes or Restart your computer to take effect.

Note:
Deleting "IsShortcut" key from the following Registry line above can cause "Unable to Pin Apps to Taskbar and Start Menu" or "context menu is missing and not showing". Removing the "IsShortcut" effectively forces Windows to treat the shortcut as a real hard file and lead to duplicate items in the Explorer context menu.
