Repairing a window on a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire is a task that can easily be accomplished by the average vehicle owner. While most auto repairs may seem intimidating or require the help of a trained technician, car window repair can be done in the driveway at your home. Once you have learned how to fix just one of the windows on your 1997 Pontiac Sunfire, the process can be used to repair other car windows as well.
Instructions
The Door Panel
- 1
Make sure that the car window is rolled down and remove all the visible screws from the door panel. Slowly remove the door panel to make sure that there aren't any wires caught. If there are wires, dislodge them or disconnect them at the harness; never cut any wires.
2While looking at the inside of the car door, locate a black or silver horizontal bar. If your window is still intact you will readily see the metal bar; if not, this is the metal track your car window used to sit in. At both ends of the metal track will be bolts that hold the car window glass in place. Remove the bolts using your socket wrench set and place them in a safe place.
3Before you install the new car window glass, make sure that the window track and the inside of the door is free of debris. Use a pair of gloves to protect your hands from glass shards and possible sharp metal inside the car door.
Putting the car window glass in requires no special trick other than sliding the front of the car window in first while gradually lowering the rear.
While lowering the replacement car window, make sure that it lines up correctly on the window track where the two bolts will go.
Secure the new car window glass into position by bolting it in. Caution should be used while tightening the bolts because over tightening the bolts will cause the car window glass to break. One-quarter turn past hand tight should be sufficient.
Reconnect any wires while replacing the door panel the same way that you took it off and test your new window.
