The spark plugs on a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am with a 3.4-liter engine, should be replaced every 30,000 miles. At the time of replacement, the spark plug wires must be inspected and replaced if you find any signs of defects. The engine must be cold when replacing the spark plugs to prevent the possibility of destroying the threads in the cylinder heads. Replacing the spark plugs should be done one at a time to prevent crossing the spark plug wires.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Begin with the spark plug closest to the front of the car. Grab the spark plug boot and twist it in both directions first, then pull it off the spark plug. Never pull on the wire itself or it will separate.

    2

Blow air in all the spark plug cavities to remove any debris that might fall into the cylinder when the plug is removed.

    3

Remove the spark plug using the spark plug socket, short extension and ratchet. Turn the plug counterclockwise to remove it. Use the universal joint and short extension to change the rear spark plugs. There is a lack of space between the plugs and the firewall on the rear plugs.

Installation

    4

Gap the new spark plugs to 0.060 with the spark plug gapping tool. Place the vacuum hose on the spark plug and thread it in by hand as far as possible, turning it clockwise. Torque the spark plug to 11 foot-pounds.

    5

Place some dielectric grease inside the spark plug boot. Insert the spark plug boot on the spark plug and press it down until it snaps in place.

    6

Change the remainder of the spark plugs on this side in the same manner.
