The brake booster on a 92 Buick Le Sabre multiplies the braking force applied by the brake pedal. Its vacuum operated drawing the necessary vacuum from the engine intake manifold. The round booster has a rubber diaphragm with a coil spring to oppose the vacuum. Vacuum is introduced into the booster through a one way valve on the face of the booster. This prevents vacuum from escaping. When the brakes are applied outside atmospheric pressure is introduced allowing the vacuum to overcome the coil spring pressure and force the brake rod into the master cylinder.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Install the memory saver in the power port or cigarette lighter. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery using a socket to keep the brake light from remaining on as the booster is replaced. Remove the two nuts securing the master cylinder to the brake booster using a socket. Slide the master cylinder forward off the brake booster studs leaving the brake lines connected. Move the master cylinder just enough to allow the removal of the brake booster.

    2

Pull the sound insulation back to expose the four brake booster nuts. Remove the nuts with a socket, 6-inch extension and universal swivel joint. Pull the top of the booster out slightly so it is tipped downward to ease the removal of the clevis pin.

    3

Pull the vacuum hose off the one-way valve on the booster. Move under the dash and remove the spring-clip from the clevis pin in the brake pedal arm using needle nose pliers. Use the needle nose pliers to work the clevis pin out of the brake pedal arm releasing the brake booster rod.

Installation

    4

Install a new gasket over the brake booster studs. Install the brake booster by aligning its studs with the holes in the firewall and pushing them through. Tip the top of the booster down slightly to ease the installation of the clevis pin.

    5

Align the booster push rod with the hole in the brake pedal arm and push the clevis pin through the rod and the arm. Install the spring clip in the end of the clevis pin. Install the nuts on the brake booster studs. Torque the nuts to 15 foot-pounds.Install the master cylinder on the brake booster studs and torque the two nuts to 20 foot-pounds.

    6

Push the vacuum hose on the one-way valve on the brake booster. Install the negative battery cable using a socket.
