The 2006 Kia Sorento was available in both two-wheel and four-wheel-drive types. The 2006 Sorento was equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produced 192-horsepower and 217 foot-pounds of torque. The onboard diagnostic computer, or OBD-II, gathers information from the various sensors on the 2006 Sorento. A trouble code or DTC is created when a sensor senses a fault in the vehicle. DTCs are stored in the OBD-II system until the system is scanned and the source of the code is repaired, or the code is removed.

Instructions

    1

Open the driver's door of the Sorento. Kneel next to the door area and locate the OBD-II port underneath the driver's side dashboard. Plug the OBD-II scanner into the port, then sit in the driver's seat. Turn the ignition key to the "II" accessories position without starting the vehicle. Press the power button on the scanner and allow the scanner to boot.

    2

Use the "Up" and "Down arrows to select the information about your Sorento. Use the "Read" button or the "OK" button in the center of the keypad to accept your entries. Select "Read Trouble Codes" from the menu options, and press the button to accept this entry. Allow the scanner to communicate with the Sorento.

    3

Collect the data from the scanner and write down the specific number for the trouble code provided. Write down the brief definition provided by the scanner, or the long definition depending on the quality of your scanner. Use the "Up" or "Down" arrow keys to scroll through the scanner memory and see if more than one trouble code exists. Most scanners will have a small listing at the top that gives you the total amount of codes found. Example: 1 of 3.

    4

Research the DTC based on the specific P number the scanner provided you. Make the proper repairs or have the repairs made to eliminate the source of the trouble code.

    5

Scan the Sorento once repairs have been made. Allow the scanner to bring up the original trouble code. Press the "Erase" button to remove the code from the OBD-II computer in the vehicle. Drive the Sorento as you normally would. If the "Check Engine" light immediately lights up, or illuminates within a few miles, then the original source of the trouble code may have not been repaired. Scan the Sorento again to find out what DTC is appearing. Make repairs accordingly.
