The 1970 Karmann Ghia is a convertible produced by Volkswagen. In the years since, technological innovations to car radios and stereos have been legion. If you want to upgrade the sound in your Karmann Ghia by installing a new stereo, you will need to remove the old stereo from the center portion of the vehicle's dashboard. Thankfully, you can remove the stereo with only a few tools in a little under half an hour. Before installing the stereo, make sure it is compatible with the Karmann Ghia. To be sure of compatibility, you may wish to purchase a stereo from Volkswagen directly. If not, you may need to use an in-dash radio installation kit.

    Raise the vehicle's hood and use a socket wrench to disconnect the battery.

    Remove the four retaining screws from around the plastic stereo trim with a Phillips screwdriver. Pry the trim off with a flat-head screwdriver.

    Remove the four retaining screws from the stereo itself with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the stereo out and disconnect the radio's wiring connector. Remove the stereo from the vehicle.

    Place the new stereo into the vehicle and connect its wiring connector.

    Reattach the screws. Reattach the plastic stereo trim and its screws. Reconnect the vehicle's battery and close the hood.
