How to Remove a Brake Caliper From a 2003 Mazda 6

The brake caliper on a 2006 Mazda 6 applies pressure to the brake pads, pressing them against the rotor to stop the vehicle. Just like any other component of a vehicle, the calipers can become worn out over time. When a caliper does wear out, it can either be rebuilt or replaced. No matter the process in which you are going to rectify the caliper failure, removal of the caliper is necessary before any work can be performed. This process requires only a few tools and is relatively easy.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel from which you intend to remove the caliper.

    2

Raise the front of the Mazda 6 off of the ground with the floor jack, and support the vehicle by placing jack stands beneath it.

    3

Remove the previously loosened lug nuts, and pull the wheels from the vehicle.

    4

Place the drain pan directly below the brake caliper.

    5

Look on the caliper's rear-side, and locate the banjo bolt. This is the bolt connecting the rubber brake hose to the caliper.

    6

Trace the brake line from the bolt to about halfway up the brake hose. Wrap that section of hose with the shop rag, to prevent damage, and clamp the locking pliers over the shop rag. This seals the brake hose, preventing any brake fluid from escaping.

    7

Loosen the banjo bolt, using a ratchet and socket, and remove it from the rear of the caliper. Pull the brake hose off the caliper. Discard the old brass washer beneath the banjo bolt; it must be replaced.

    8

Examine the rear portion of the brake caliper, and locate the caliper bolt caps -- two black, rubber caps that cover the upper and lower caliper bolts. Pull these caps from the bolts.

    9

Loosen and remove the two caliper bolts using a ratchet and a hex-bit socket. Pull the caliper upward and off the vehicle's brake assembly.

    10

Repeat steps 4 through 9 for the brake caliper on the opposite side of the Mazda 6, if needed.
