The gas canister on Chevrolet S-10 model trucks is better known as a charcoal canister. The charcoal canister is a part of the vehicle's emissions control system. The purpose of the charcoal canister is to filter out gas fumes to prevent the fumes from venting into the environment. The gas fumes enter the canister and go through the charcoal. As the gas fumes passes through the charcoal, the charcoal absorbs the fumes. The canister has a total of two to three lines attached to the bottom of the canister.

Instructions

    1

Unscrew the gas cap from the gas tank to release excess gas vapors from the vapor lines. Locate the gas charcoal canister that is either in one of the rear corners inside of the engine compartment or beside the gas tank, depending on what model S-10 the truck is. The canister is a round black cylinder shaped container with two vapor lines coming out of it.

    2

Slide a drip pan underneath the two lines. Beginning with one of the vapor lines, wrap a clean rag around the top of the line connection. Squeeze together the plastic tabs that lock the vapor line to the port. Twist the line counterclockwise half a turn while squeezing the plastic tabs. Pull straight out on the vapor line until it slides off the port.

    3

Move to the other vapor line and squeeze the plastic clips together. Twist the line counterclockwise half a turn and pull straight out on the line until it slides off the port.

    4

Slide the drip pan out from under the canister. Screw the gas cap back onto the gas tank tightly.
