With the Honda Accord reaching impressive sales numbers, Toyota saw the need to upgrade its lineup with a front-driven mid-sized sedan, as well. To that end, Toyota eliminated its rear-wheel-drive Corona model and released the all-new front-driven Camry, in 1983. In 1997, Toyota released the fourth generation Camry, giving its flagship sedan more aggressive body lines in place of the curvy body during the third generation. The 1998 Camry's entry-level stereo system was an AM-FM cassette player, and below this cassette player was a small pocket for storage. Removing this radio is straightforward and requires few tools.
Instructions
- 1
Pull the ashtray to its outward position. Press and hold the metal tab on top of the inner part of the ashtray, and slide the ashtray out of the dash bezel -- the plastic trim surrounding the radio and heater controls.
2Grab the dash bezel below where the ashtray was, and pull outward firmly to detach the lower retaining clips. Pull all around the perimeter of the dash bezel to disconnect the remaining retaining clips. Remove the dash bezel, and set it in a secure location.
3Remove the four bolts securing the cassette player and storage pocket to the dashboard, using a ratchet, 3-inch extension and 10 mm socket. Pull the radio from the dashboard just far enough so you can reach the wiring on its backside.
4Pull the black antenna lead from the rear of the radio, using a slight twisting motion. Press and hold the locking button on one of the radio's wiring harnesses, and pull the harness from the radio -- repeat this process to unplug the other wiring harness. Pull the radio and pocket from the vehicle.
5Plug the wiring harnesses into the rear of the radio until they click into place. Plug the antenna wiring into the antenna receptacle on the rear of the radio.
6Slide the cassette player and pocket assembly into the dashboard, and tighten its four retaining bolts with a ratchet, 3-inch extension and 10 mm socket.
7Set the dash bezel back into place, lining up the clips on the rear of the bezel up with the slots in the dashboard. Lightly strike the perimeter of the dash bezel to engage the retaining clips into the slots in the dash, locking the bezel in place.
8Slide the ashtray back onto its track, and press it inward until it closes.
