The mirror knob on a 1996 Volkswagen Golf is located near the center of the door panel, just in front of the door pull cup. This knob is a part of the mirror switch and cannot be replaced separately. To replace a broken or malfunctioning mirror knob, you must replace the entire mirror switch assembly as a unit. Mirror switch assemblies are available new from licensed Volkswagen dealerships but can also be purchased used from most local automotive recyclers.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Insert a screwdriver into the securing clip on the front edge of the interior door handle trim piece. Pry the securing clip out of its hole while pressing the door handle trim piece forward. Remove the door handle trim piece from the door handle.

    2

    Disconnect the mirror switch connector.

    3

Disengage the mirror switch retaining tabs with a flat-head screwdriver and remove the mirror switch assembly.

Installation

    4

Align the new mirror switch assembly with the retaining slot in the door handle and press down on the switch assembly until it pops into place.

    5

    Reconnect the mirror switch connector.

    6

Set the door handle trim piece into place on the door handle and press down on it until it snaps into place. Test the new mirror switch to verify that it operates properly.
