How to Adjust a CST Sleeve

A CST sleeve is a hard rubber coupling that fits over the upper ball joints, which are an integral part of your car or truck's suspension system. Over time these sleeves can become loose. If this happens, dirt and other debris can contaminate the ball joint. Short term, this can cause poor handling and faster wear and tear of the ball joints. If it is left unchecked for a long period of time, it can completely ruin the ball joints. If the sleeve comes loose it should be adjusted and secured back in place immediately.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts on the tire on the side of the vehicle where the CST sleeve needs to be adjusted. Use a lug wrench to loosen them.

    2

Jack up the vehicle and set it on a jack stand securely, either on a jack point or on the frame.

    3

Use the lug wrench to remove the lugs and then pull the tire off and set it aside.

    4

Locate the sleeve at the top of the upper control arm.

    5

Position and adjust the sleeve in place by hand so that it fits securely over the ball joints and then tighten the retaining screw on the sleeve with the screwdriver.

    6

Place the tire back on the vehicle and then replace the lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench and then jack up the vehicle 8 to 10 inches. Pull the jack stand out and then lower the vehicle completely with the jack.
