How to Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor on a 1988 Dodge Van 5.2L

Dodge released its first generation of full-sized vans in 1964 and named it the A-series -- it included the A100, A200 and A300 variants. In 1971, the second generation of full-size Dodge vans, the B-series, hit the showroom floors. In 1981, Dodge added the "Ram" name to its full-size vans, just as it did with the full-size pickups. The 1988 Ram Van came in three main sizes: B150, B250 and B350. The B350 version of the 1988 Ram Van came standard with a 170-horsepower, 5.3-liter V-8. The coolant temperature sensor relayed the coolant temperature to the gauge on the dashboard. Fortunately, Dodge located the coolant temperature sensor on the front of the intake manifold, making for a straightforward replacement process.

Shut the engine down and allow it to cool until it's cool to the touch, if needed. Slowly remove the radiator cap to relieve any pressure in the cooling system.

Find the coolant temperature sensor -- the electrical sensor on the front, passenger's side of the intake manifold. Pull upward on the locking tab that secures the wiring harness to the coolant temperature sensor and pull the wiring harness from the sensor.

Remove the coolant temperature sensor, using a ratchet and deep-well socket.

Coat the threads on the base of the coolant temperature sensor with a liquid thread sealer. Allow the thread sealer to cure for the time recommended by the sealant's instructions.

Hand-tighten the coolant temperature sensor into the intake manifold, then tighten it with a ratchet and deep-well socket. Do not over-tighten the sensor, as the sensor may break, or the intake manifold may strip.

Plug the wiring harness into the coolant temperature sensor.

Tighten the radiator cap back into place on the radiator.
