The 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix features a factory six-speaker audio system, which includes a pair of full-range 6-by-9-inch speakers, mounted on the rear deck. Because the rear-deck speakers use the vehicle's trunk area as a free-air speaker enclosure, the 6-by-9 speakers play a crucial role with regard to resonant bass frequency production. Removing the rear-deck speakers for replacement or diagnosing audio issues does not require any specialized tools.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Examine the bottom portion of the rear seat cushion and locate the two release rings. The release rings are tucked between the seat cushion and the raised area of the foot well floor.
2Pull the release rings to disengage the locking mechanisms that secure the bottom seat cushion to the floor; remove the seat cushion from the vehicle.
3Remove the bolts that secure the left and right bottom edge of the seat back to the floor by using the appropriate-size socket, extension and ratchet. Remove the two remaining nuts that secure the center portion of the seat back and seatbelt straps to the floor by using the appropriate-size socket, extension and ratchet; slide the seatbelt anchors from the threaded studs.
4Grasp the bottom of the seat back and free it from the two threaded studs by using an upward pulling motion. Continue pulling up on the seat back to release the top clips that secure the seat back to the vehicle. Once freed, remove the seat back from the vehicle.
5Remove the three round plastic push clips that secure the carpeted rear deck panel to the vehicle by using a large flat-head screwdriver or appropriate-size door panel removal tool. Be careful not to damage the clips during the removal process.
6Lift the carpeted rear deck panel and free the seatbelt straps from each side clip. Remove the carpeted panel and insulation from the vehicle.
7Remove the four screws that secure each speaker to the rear deck by using an appropriate-size socket and ratchet. Lift the speakers out of the rear deck and disconnect the wiring connectors. Note that you must disengage the small black locking tabs for each wiring connector.
Installation
- 8
Connect the wiring connectors to the corresponding terminals on each speaker.
9Fit the speakers into the rear deck mounting holes. Secure each speaker to the rear deck with the original screws by using an appropriate-size socket and ratchet.
10Replace the insulation and carpeted rear deck cover. Be sure to feed the center-mounted child restraint anchor through the opening provided on the deck cover and clip the seatbelts to the sides.
11Secure the bottom portion of the carpeted panel to the vehicle by using the three push pins and pressing with your thumbs.
12Position the rear seat cover approximately six inches from the bottom mounting points and slide the cushion down to re-clip the upper portion while pushing against the seat back. It may take several attempts to properly line up and clip the top portion of the seat back to the vehicle.
13Secure the bottom center portion of the seat back and seatbelt anchors to the floor pan with the two nuts by using the appropriate socket, extension and ratchet. Replace the remaining side bolts to finish securing the seat back to the vehicle.
14Fit the rear seat cushion into place, remembering to pull the seatbelt anchors and lap belt out from between the cushion and seat back. Push down on the seat cushion to engage the locking mechanisms.
