Adjust your Pontiac Bonneville underneath the vehicle using only a simple screwdriver. Making the adjustment at home instead of taking the car to the mechanic shop saves you time and money. Adjust the parking brake when the car starts to roll when parked on an incline. Use these instructions for years 1986 through 1999 or 2000 to 2005.

Instructions

Years 1986 Through 1999

    1

Pull up and release the parking brake 10 clicks on Pontiac Bonneville years 1986 through 1990. Reduce this number to six clicks for years 1991 though 1999. Repeat the pulling up and releasing of the parking brake lever six times for all years.

    2

Raise your car using the jack and support both rear wheels with the jack stands. Remove the access hole plug on the backing plates from both rear brakes.

    3

Move the parking brake cable until a 1/8 inch drill bit inserts through the access hole by hand.

    4

Pull up on the parking brake until it makes one click. Try to rotate the wheels backwards and see if they have some tension. Move the wheels forward to test the fact that they should not move at all.

    5

Release the parking brake completely and make sure the wheels are free to rotate. Reinstall the access hole plugs. Lower your car with the jack and remove the jack stands.

Years 2000 to 2005

    6

Apply your cars service brake with 150 pounds of pressure and release.

    7

Press in on your parking brake with 125 pounds of pressure and release. Repeat two times. Verify the parking brake light is activated after the parking brake is applied.

    8

Raise your vehicle using the jack and jack stands. Adjust the parking brake cables that run underneath the center of your car, using your pliers.

    9

Verify the wheels turn freely. Press in on the parking brake and verify the wheels are stopped. Lower your car by releasing the jack and removing the jack stands.
